Welcome to ASP-DAC 2018

General Chair, ASP-DAC2018 On behalf of the ASP-DAC 2018 Organizing Committee, I would like to invite all colleagues from academia and industry in EDA and IC and system design areas to the 23rd Asia and South Pacific Design Automation Conference (ASP-DAC 2018), which will be held from January 22nd (Monday) to 25th (Thursday) at International Convention Center (ICC) Jeju, Korea.

ASP-DAC was founded in 1995 and has continuously offered opportunity to get exposed to the advanced and recent technologies and to communicate each other for researchers around Asia and South Pacific regions. ASP-DAC has established itself as a prestigious conference with her sister conferences including Design Automation Conference (DAC), International Conference on Computer Aided Design (ICCAD), Design, Automation and Test in Europe (DATE) Conference, and Embedded Systems Week (ESWEEK).

This year’s venue, ICC Jeju, is the facility famous for hosting international conferences and meetings. It is located in the Jungmun Tourist Complex with the Ocean right on the south and Mount Hallasan in the north. It is close to a wide range of hotels, resorts, tourist attractions, restaurants, which probably will bring ASP-DAC 2018 participants a wonderful experience. Jeju Island (also known as Jejudo or Jeju) is the largest island which lies on the southern side off the coast of the Korean Peninsula. Jeju is famous for its natural scene of breathtaking beauty. It is a popular vacation spot and remains one of the top honeymoon destinations for newlyweds. Jeju can conveniently be reached from many cities in Asian countries through direct flight; the flight from Seoul, the capital city of Korea which is directly reachable from all over the world, to Jeju is only an hour.

This year, we received 271 submissions from all over the world. Under the leadership of Technical Program Chair, Atsushi Takahashi, the Technical Program Committee members conducted rigorous and thorough reviews and a full-day face-to-face meeting to select 88 excellent papers which were arranged as 24 technical sessions. Technical Program Vice Chairs, Taewhan Kim and Tohru Ishihara, led the effort to compile 6 special sessions; 1 session was named Industry Session to emphasize that the session is toward the industrial perspective in the application of machine learning.

Three Keynote sessions have been arranged. The first session will host Dr. Jeff Burns from IBM; he will focus on accelerator design and integration for heterogeneous systems. The second keynote will be delivered by Prof. Andrew Kahng from UCSD. He will address three levers, quality, schedule, and cost to cope with scaling requirements today and in near future. The session on Thursday is a joint keynote with common theme of memory. Recent trend in big data, artificial intelligence, and data center requires high capacity and high bandwidth memory. This topic will be addressed by Dr. Woojong Han from SK Hynix, Korea and by Prof. Joungho Kim from KAIST, Korea.

We are happy to host two embedded workshops in the afternoon of the last day. “Workshop on Memory and Storage Devices and Systems” will be a nice combination with the morning keynote in the same day. “EDA Winter Workshop” is jointly hosted by IEEE CEDA Seoul Chapter and ACM SIGDA Korea Chapter; a variety of hot topics from sister conferences will be reviewed and studied. Six tutorials have been prepared on January 22nd (Monday). Each tutorial lasts two hours and is offered twice; participants can attend three tutorials of their choice. In addition, university design contest will be held as a technical session followed by posters during lunch break on January 24th.

ASP-DAC 2018 is an ideal platform to meet people and exchange ideas in the field of design automation and IC/system design. We are looking forward to an exciting conference, and we hope that you will join us in January.
